The most popular style of Roll-Off Cable hoist is the outside rail. With capacities ranging from 20,000 lb all the way to 75,000 lb the American Roll-Off brand offers multiple outside rail options.

Above Frame Roll-Off hoists feature inboard mounted lift cylinders and a single reeving cylinder. This makes the American ART roll-off a great choice for multi axle and single axle roll off dumpster rental companies.

A roll-off truck is a commercial truck equipped with a cable hoist system that pulls open-top containers — called roll-off boxes or dumpsters — onto and off the truck bed using a steel cable. The container rolls up a subframe on rails and sits on the truck bed for transport. Roll-off trucks are the backbone of the dumpster rental industry and are widely used in construction, demolition, and C&D debris hauling.
Outside rail (standard) roll-off hoists mount the hoist mechanism on rails outside the truck frame, making them a versatile, widely-used design suited for most applications. American Roll-Off's ART (Above Frame) model mounts the lift cylinders inboard above the frame with a single reeving cylinder, giving you a cleaner installation and better compatibility with multi-axle chassis. The ART is a strong choice for tandem axle dumpster rental operations where frame space and weight distribution matter. We'll recommend the right configuration based on your chassis and how you'll be running the truck.
American Roll-Off hoists range from 20,000 lb to 75,000 lb capacity. The right capacity depends on your containers, your typical payload, and your chassis GVW rating. A single-axle truck on a lighter chassis running 10-yard boxes needs a very different hoist than a tandem running 40-yard containers with heavy debris. Oversizing wastes payload; undersizing creates safety and durability problems. We spec hoist capacity to match your actual operation.
Roll-off containers range from 10-yard boxes commonly used in residential dumpster rental all the way to 40-yard open-top containers used in commercial demolition and large-scale C&D work. The hoist, subframe length, and chassis wheelbase must all be matched to the containers you intend to run. If you already own containers, bring us the specs — we'll build the truck around what you have.
Most roll-off trucks require a CDL. The hoist, subframe, and loaded container weight typically push the vehicle well above the 26,001 lb CDL threshold, even on lighter chassis. If you need a no-CDL option for dumpster rental, a hooklift truck is worth considering — hooklifts can handle similar container sizes at lower GVW ratings in some configurations. We're happy to walk through both options with you.
Yes, we install American Roll-Off hoists on customer-supplied chassis. The chassis must be in acceptable condition and properly rated for the hoist being installed. We inspect the chassis before committing to the install. Frame condition, wheelbase, and cab-to-axle measurement all factor into compatibility. If you need help sourcing a chassis, Smith Truck Co can assist.
A standard roll-off install typically takes 7–14 business days depending on hoist model, chassis configuration, and current shop workload. We'll give you a realistic timeline at the time of quoting — we don't rush installations.
